Ever hear of the phrase You have to spend money to make money? Now how can that be possible with your blog? Remember those affiliate programs we talked about? The only way you are going to make any money off of those is if people visit your site. So lets take the following example.

You sign up to be an affiliate for a dog washing business. Your blog is all about dogs and products and that sort of thing. You even devoted an entire post about the dog washing site that you are an affiliate for. Only problem is that the words dog and washing are very common and you aren't ranking too high on Google. In fact you went through and found out that your site was the 473rd site that was listed in Google for that phrase.

Now you could take out an adwords campaign which we will discuss later, but for now you are more concerned with how you can get your site up from 473 to if you are lucky a top 30. Cause after all, 30 is a lot better and more likely someone will visit your site. So the trick is how does Google know your site is better than the previous 472 sites?

Well they have a massive algorithm. Many people have tried over the years to crack it, but to no avail. The only thing that we know for sure is that the content you provide on your site plays a role, as do people who link you, people who you link to, and people who link to the people you link to. Other things that might play a role are keyword density, if people click on your site for the search phrase, if the stars are aligned, etc...

So you can control a lot of the major factors: your content, who you link to, and who links you. Ok the last one is a bit of a stretch, but you can to some extent. Purchasing ad space on a related site will help you out immensely. Much more so than if you purchased advertising on a site devoted to Linux. It may take some time, so don't frustrated if it doesn't work over night, or even in a month. Building a website takes time, and patients, which is something we all need to work on.
